Modding: Chilleditx scratch case build

This is my latest from scratch PC case build. Consisting of mini-ITX components in a predominantly acrylic 200 mm cube and showing off a large CPU heatsink like those found only in ATX builds. This will be updated as a running work log for you to follow.

Introduction

This build doesn’t come out of necessity but rather out of a desire to build something a little different. In other words this isn’t a build that I have an actual need for, or in fact have a home for when I’m finished. However with some great quality ITX motherboards now reaching market such as the Zotac range and some really impressive looking CPU heatsinks with arrays of fins and heatpipes, I thought it’d be cool to build a clear ITX PC sporting one of these impressive CPU heatsinks.

So I decided that I could build the PC in a 200 mm acrylic cube and assign the less showy components to a small under layer in the base of the cube, leaving as much space as possible in the upper section for the motherboard, heatsinks, memory etc. Then by obscuring the view through the acrylic outer at the bottom, the lower section components would be hidden from view and all the focus could be on the heatsink and upper components.

Component Sponsorship

As this build is not needed for any purpose and featured on this website I decided that I should try to get some sponsorship for the project from suppliers so I set about sending emails. Unfortunately responses were few and far between as I’m yet to build up a good list of contacts. However I do have a promise of a power supply from Overtek in the new year.

Update: In addition to the promise of a power supply, I now have a 50 mm fan kindly supplied by Fractal Design. This will be used in conjunction with the power supply exhaust fan to cool the lower section.
